The BEST Homemade Pasta Sauce

Before this year, I’ve never been one to make pasta sauce from scratch.  I thought it would take a lot of extra effort, a ton of different ingredients and hours simmering on the stove.  But when I tried this homemade lasagne recipe and realized how much yummier homemade pasta sauce tastes…I’ve been making it from scratch ever since.  If you ever want to make lasagne from scratch, definitely follow the above recipe.

I’ll include the recipe for the sauce from the lasagne recipe below with a few modifications that I’ve made since I’ve been making it.

Ingredients:

1 package sweet Italian sausage links

One pound lean ground beef

A small minced onion

2 cloves crushed garlic

1 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes

2 6 ounce cans tomato paste

2 6.5 ounce cans of tomato sauce

1/2 cup water

2 T white sugar

1 1/2 tsp. dried basil leaves

1/2 tsp fennel seeds

1 tsp italian seasoning

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

2 T fresh parsley chopped

Directions:

Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic in a Dutch oven over medium heat until well browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Season with sugar, 2 tablespoons parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and pepper. Simmer, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

This makes quite a bit of homemade pasta sauce, so I use what I need for that nights dinner and then will usually freeze the rest in freezer bags.

Here’s a quick reel I made on Instagram to show how I bag up the sauce I make.

Let me know if you try this sauce! Hope you like it if you do!

See you back here tomorrow.
